Have you ever dreamed of escaping the routine, getting your hands in the soil, and connecting with nature in a meaningful way? WWOOFing offers a unique pathway to do just that. Through the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) network, you can spend a few days, weeks, or even a whole season living and learning on organic farms and gardens across Canada. This is a hands-on cultural and educational exchange, not a traditional job an opportunity to embrace sustainable living, enjoy healthy outdoor work, and become part of a host family’s daily life in exchange for food and accommodation.
About the WWOOF Network
WWOOF is an international movement that connects volunteers with organic farmers, gardeners, and homesteaders. In Canada alone, there are approximately 850 hosts, offering an incredible diversity of experiences from mountain homesteads and prairie grain farms to coastal market gardens and solar-powered ecovillages. The network operates on principles of mutual trust, cultural exchange, and shared passion for sustainable living. It’s designed for people of all ages and experience levels who want to learn, contribute, and immerse themselves in a healthy, land-based lifestyle.
What Does WWOOFing Involve?
As a WWOOFer (volunteer), your experience will be shaped by your host and your own interests. Typical activities may include:
- Â Planting, weeding, harvesting, composting, caring for livestock, and learning organic growing methods.
- Helping with natural building, food preservation, renewable energy systems, or other homesteading tasks.
- Â Sharing meals, learning about local food culture, and participating in the rhythms of farm life.
- Contributing your own skills, whether in cooking, carpentry, teaching, arts, or childcare.
The work is generally around 4-6 hours per day, 5 days a week, in exchange for your meals and a place to stay. The specific arrangement is always agreed upon directly between you and your host.
Is WWOOFing Right For You?
WWOOFing is ideal for individuals who:
- Have a genuine curiosity about organic agriculture, sustainability, and rural living.
- Are open-minded, adaptable, and possess a positive, “can-do” attitude.
- Enjoy physical, outdoor work and are comfortable with basic, shared accommodations.
- Value cultural exchange, clear communication, and building respectful relationships.
- Are responsible, self-motivated, and see this as a learning journey rather than a paid occupation.
- No prior farming experience is necessary a willingness to learn and help is the only requirement.
 How to Begin Your Journey

To access host listings and start your adventure, you need to become a member.
- Purchase a membership from WWOOF Canada (approximately $50 for a 2-year individual membership). This gives you direct online access to the full directory of Canadian hosts.
- Explore host profiles, find opportunities that match your interests, and contact hosts directly to discuss details like timing, tasks, and accommodations.
- Â Agree on the terms of your stay directly with your chosen host. Remember, WWOOF is a network, not a placement agency you are responsible for your own travel, insurance, and arrangements.
