What You’ll Be Doing
- Driving scheduled routes:Â You’ll operate a school bus on regular daily routes, plus special occasions like field trips or sporting events.
- Checking your bus before each trip:Â You’ll inspect the bus to make sure everything’s working properly and report any issues right away.
- Keeping kids safe:Â You’ll remind students about safety practices and maintain orderly conduct on the bus so everyone rides safely.
- Assisting students who need help:Â When necessary, you’ll help handicapped students get on and off the bus and make sure they’re seated comfortably.
- Keeping the bus clean:Â You’ll maintain the interior and exterior so the bus is always presentable and ready to go.
- Maintaining records:Â You’ll keep track of mileage, routes, times, and any incidents that come up during your shifts.
- Mapping routes:Â You’ll prepare and update maps showing routes and pick-up points so everything stays organized.
What You’ll Need
- A valid New York State Driver’s License at the appropriate level. You must have it when you apply, and you’ll need to maintain it throughout your employment.
- At least 21 years of age this is a requirement for school bus drivers.
- Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations.
- The ability to operate a bus under difficult driving conditions and on various types of roads.
- Mechanical aptitude to handle minor repairs to the vehicle when needed.
- The ability to follow simple oral and written directions clearly and accurately.
- A genuine ability to get along with children and command their respect in a firm but friendly way.
- Mental alertness, dependability, and physical condition that matches the demands of the position.
- Satisfaction of all requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulation of the New York State Commissioner of Education.
