Key Responsibilities

As a Transportation Operations Technician II, you will perform a diverse range of critical maintenance tasks. Your core duties will include:

  • Performing highway maintenance such as patching pavement, repairing guardrails, clearing brush, cleaning ditches, and picking up litter.
  • Safely operating medium and heavy equipment, including snowplows with wings, graders, backhoes, and excavators, especially during winter storm response.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and basic repair of fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Responding to emergencies and severe weather events, which will require considerable overtime and being reachable by phone.
  • Adhering to all safety protocols while working in and around active traffic and heavy machinery.
  • Completing all required training coursework through the Vermont Transportation Training Center (VTTC).

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with practical experience and a commitment to public service. The minimum qualifications are:

  • One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor, AND either one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six months of operating medium/heavy equipment like graders or excavators.
  • OR successful completion of probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement.
  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of hire.
  • The ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • The willingness and ability to live within a reasonable commuting distance of the assigned workstation.
  • Availability for significant overtime, particularly in winter, and participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program.
